Read Geoff's "how to" on replacing these parts -
http://www.heliguy.com/Forum/main-shaft-removal-cp2-t3229.html
And decided it was time I did this - and took some photos to help others.
After many a fight with the CP2, me losing but it coming the worst off.
Thought it was time for a major rebuild. Some head shaking on start up made me get a new main shaft, and also a few heavy landings and blade strikes to the ground, not to mention the sticky collective coming and going - decided to replace the feathered shaft.
Been having problems with the tail too, were it wants to spin left all the time, advice here suggested a new tail motor, so got one of those too. - (twin tail motor assembly is over the Atlantic somewhere at the mo)...
Here is how the rebuild went:
Step 1: Take 1 HB CP2 and some replacement parts
Step 2: Take the canopy off
You will notice I use the King frame and have moved the 4in1.
I like the battery holder on this frame and wanted to make the whole thing more solid.
Step 3: These are the replacement parts
Main shaft - Tail motor - and - Feather shaft
Step 4: Remove blades and unclip connecting arms (4)
Step 5: With the connecting rods loose, remove main shaft head pin
The pin in the main shaft can be seen behind the front ball connector.
Step 6: Remove the rotor assembly
Step 7: Undo the shaft retaining collar grub screw
Step 8: Push the shaft down enough to expose the retaining pin
Step 9: Remove the retaining pin
Step 10: Pull the shaft clear
Here I could not get the shaft to go through the swash plate, so had to tilt the swash and pull it towards the right in the picture.
Not sure if is because of a slight bend?
Step 11: Insert new shaft, making sure its the correct way up - small pin hole nearest the end of the shaft goes to the bottom
Insert the retaining pin with the main drive wheel in place, and secure the collar and tighten the grub screw.
Check there is no play up or down between the collar and drive shaft.
Ok first bit done.
Replacing Feathered Shaft
Step 1: Loosen the retaining allen screws
Step 2: As the shaft is pulled through one side (either will do)
Be aware there are washers in the locations highlighted.
2 where the allen screws are and one each side just next to rotor assembly
You may have to hold the shaft with pliers in a rag to get the other screw from the other end.
Step 3: Place the washers on one screw and tighten in to new shaft
Step 4: Push the shaft back in to the blade clamps, carefully remembering to include the washers between the blade grips and rotor assembly.
Step 5: Replace the other retaining allen screw and washers through the other blade grip
Check the 'Sticky Collective' threads here for the correct order for the washers.
Step 6: Replace the blades, and we are ready to fly again.
Second bit done...
Tail motor replacement
Step 1: Unsolder the wires from the terminals on the motor
Step 2: Remove the retaining screws near the rear propellor
Step 3: Insert new motor and fasten screws
Step 4: Solder the wires to the new motor
Remember to add you heat sink before soldering the wires
- if you have one (its easier)
All done, time to test fly...
Well the conclusion to all this work, for me, its a little more stable, but this CP2 is a challenge to fly. Well at least for me anyway.
Many thanks to Geoff for the guide, Heliguy for the parts, and to you for reading.
I hope this helps others, it is fairly easy to do.
Regards,
Andrew
