yes do the mod, it gives you a 'play free' link between servos and swash.
sheck out the post for how to's, using the nini titon brackets is the best way as there is no weakening of the stoc ...

one season you landing gear is not working properly is that they look to be mounted at 'the wrong angle'
as the heli lands the wieght presses down but the wheel is directly below the spring ...

the order sounds right for the feathering shaft,
without 'any' links on the head to swash will the blades rotate around the feathering shaft axis......if not the feathering shaft may be too ...

the red wire from the esc to rx is the power, so if you put another power source in then you need to disconect the esc power[just the red one] .
on the back of the rx plug [ from esc] gently ...

a ubec will gaurantee your volts to the rx, where as without .....on big power pulls from the motor......... the esc will/can drop the volts to the rx, also it will help if you are using dig ...

try a different type of driver, 'miniture philips' or 'torx' [look like a gear if seen 'end on' ] drivers sometimes get a grip
try 'filing' the end of the hex driver to get back to a 'new' ...
