I've just upgraded my Honey Bee King with the Esky brushless motor (3900kV) and Esky ESC (EK1-0350) with a 10T pinion gear.
I was struggling to get the ESC connection to plug into the battery (the connectors don't seem to be the easiest to connect up), and the ESC started to smoke, followed by the motor. I immediately unplugged it, but it looks like the ESC is gone, and some of the wiring in the motor is burnt. I could not understand why this happened as I didn't even run the motor.
However, searching on the internet I read something about another brand of ESC that said it could be destroyed by a bad connection to the battery, and I wondered whether me struggling to get the plugs together meant it was connected and disconnected a few times in succession which would damage the ESC. I also wondered whether the ESC could fail in a certain way that would then put current only on one of the windings causing it to burn out.
I have only every used brushed motors and ESCs in the past, so am new to this.
Any thoughts? Are the ESCs really this sensitive?
Brushless motor & ESC went up in smoke
