Problem with Telebee as a rate gyro

Posted by Bob van't Riet on December 21, 2000 at 15:36:08:

I have a problem with my Telebee Gyro for an aircraft application.

The problem is that the Gyro Control Amplifier controls the gain of the total summed signal of both the stick position and gyro rate feedback. This is wrong, inconsistent with established aircraft control methodology and highly dangerous.

It is normal in and aircraft for the stick to control surface position (rudder in this case) not to be a function of gyro gain. It is also normal for gyro gain to the adjusted (independently of stick gain) to obtain the desired aircraft dynamics. Establish control methodology is based on the concept of establishing stick gain on the based of control authority required and rate gain for the desired damping of the aircraft dynamics. Any text on aircraft controls will verify my statement. Why is Telebee departing from the norm?

The Telebee mechanization is dangerous because it allows the stick to control surface gain to be adjusted to zero in flight. If, Aux. #2 is used as the input to the Gyro Control Amplifier, as recommend in the instruction, it could be readjusted to the mid range position by the pilot resulting in no control surface movement. In this case the aircraft would be uncontrolled.

The Telebee Control Amplifier module needs to be redesigned to allow only in flight adjustment of the gyro grain. Not the summed gain.
