Hot on the heels of their joint announcements with DroneDeploy and Hasselblad, DJI has revealed a new addition to its immensely popular Zenmuse camera range. Dubbed the ‘Z3’, this new sensor from the Shenzhen drone giant is able to dynamically zoom in-flight to give users a closer view of their subject whether filming or capturing stills.

It’s important to note that this is the first aerial camera from DJI to offer a built-in optical zoom, making it an exciting prospect for their customers. Able to reach a level of up to 7x zoom when combining its 3.5x optical zoom and 2x digital zoom, DJI claim that even when fully zoomed in, quality hasn’t been sacrificed. This new zoom functionality can be controlled by swiping a device running the DJI GO app. To ensure stability, the camera has also been equipped with a purpose-built ‘Reaction Wheel’ on the yaw control, which allows for precise movements; even when the Z3 is zoomed in. The Z3 includes the Sony 1/2.3” sensor present in both the Inspire 1 and Phantom 4. It is able to capture 4K footage at 30fps and takes still images with a 12MP resolution.
DJI have announced that the Zenmuse Z3 will be compatible with the Inspire 1, Matrice 100 and Matrice 600. It utilises DJI Lightbridge and Lightbridge 2 video transmission, which is capable of sending a live, high definition feed up to a distance of 5km.
Currently being marketed primarily as a tool for industrial applications such as structural surveys or search and rescue – the Z3 enables you to get a closer look without having to fly your aircraft any nearer to the subject.
