"Drones are used to survey the railway for regular maintenance or following an incident. Drones  are a cost effective solution for close-up inspections of difficult to access structures such as building roofs, bridges, communication masts and overhead wires. As we're not sending engineers onto tracks, it also improves safety."

"Our Mavic drones are invaluable tools for our mountain rescue. I would say that using a drone makes it 50% quicker than traditional methods to do a search. It widens the search area for us, allowing us to get an overview of the area – how big it is and inspect areas of concern - and means that we get this information a lot safer."

Drones Are Transforming Operations

From London Fire Brigade to Balfour Beatty, major companies and organisations are harnessing the power of drones.

To showcase the power of drones and to highlight how they are being used in the real world, here are some case studies focusing on how UAVs are transforming the landscape.

Construction

Balfour Beatty has used drones, including the DJI Phantom 4 RTK, on a major M6 Smart Motorway upgrade in The Midlands - saving time, increasing safety and providing greater awareness.

Balfour Beatty can use the drone to fly over the site and digitise the area quicker than traditional onsite methods, meaning faster data collection and increased efficiency.

Balfour Beatty has found that drones help take people away from potentially dangerous situations and can access hard-to-reach places. They also provide a bird’s-eye view of a site, giving a full snapshot of the area, helping monitor progress and identify problems.

Craig Matthews, of Balfour Beatty, said: "It would take a surveyor, using traditional handheld equipment, about a day to measure the stockpiles and process the data. But the drone can fly over the compound in 15 minutes and process the model in about two hours.”

"What would have taken surveyors about eight hours took me about two hours with the drone. Real-time drone data yielded 75% cost savings for Chasco Constructors on a multi-million-pound project."

Inspection

Using a DJI M200 with a Z30 zoom camera, Terra Drone Europe (formerly Skeye BV) completed inspections off the west coast of Africa for a major oil company. The benefits were:

1: The drone offered a safe inspection solution, reaching hard-to-access areas and without impacting the oil major's operations.

2: Saved several months of laborious inspections with Rope Access.

3: The use of a drone for this type of inspection saved money for the client.

Patrick Rickerby, Technical Director, said: "The M200 is now considered as a main stay in the fleet after proving its worth over the last year of offshore operations."

Public Safety

Lincolnshire Police has used its drones on more than 300 jobs, from finding missing people to analysing crash scenes and surveillance.

One of its most high-profile cases was the drone unit's first successful prosecution after a man was jailed for three years for producing cannabis.

Following a scouting mission, and as a result of evidence captured by the drone, a cannabis farm was found in the culprit's house.

Special Sergeant Kevin Taylor said: "We turned up and flew the drone 400ft across an open field, before hovering 50m from the property. The heat source was obvious and we scrolled through our different filters to highlight the heat in a number of different spectrums. The filming from the drone took one minute and 20 seconds, and it was only in the air for five minutes from start to finish. It was an incredibly useful resource."

TO FIGHT CRIME AND KEEP COMMUNITIES SAFE

"By providing an aerial view of an incident drones help Incident Commanders develop tactics to help tackle it. Drones may also be able to access areas which are unsafe for firefighters. Overall, they improve safety for our crews, and help improve our response to incidents."

Film

"As a filmmaker, drones have changed the environment completely and are an absolute necessity."

That is the verdict of Phil Crothers, Director of Film and Co-founder of Pivotal, as he reflects on the growing importance and distinct advantages of using unmanned aircraft in the film industry.

And he should know, because the Northern Ireland-based company has utilised the DJI Inspire 2 drone to shoot outstanding visuals for the likes of Netflix, WarnerMedia, the BBC, ITV and Channel 4.

The drone, which can carry a range of top-quality cameras, is a vital tool for capturing unique and incredible footage.

The team at Pivotal also uses drones, including Mavics, to recce a site before production, checking for safety hazards and identifying things which can't necessarily be seen see from the ground.

Crothers said: "Drones have become a key tool for every filmmaker. The Inspire 2 has become the workhorse for us at Pivotal and has proved itself to be outstanding."

CASE STUDY: DRONES ARE AN ABSOLUTE
NECESSITY, SAYS FILMMAKER

"The Inspire 2 is a refined workhorse with little need for physical improvements. The speed of the Inspire 2 also came in handy when we were filming a fast-moving 4×4. I was able to do more than keep up, I could actually overtake, which added an extra dimension to the shots available to my director."

Science/Research

A team of researchers have used drones, including a DJI M600 Pro, to complete the most comprehensive survey of Chernobyl’s Red Forest – one of the most radioactive locations on Earth.

Flying a range of multi-rotor and fixed-wing aircraft, the scientists from the National Centre for Nuclear Robotics (NCNR) created 3D maps which not only provided up-to-date information on the sites with the greatest contamination, but also revealed previously undetected radiation hotspots.

Some areas are still strictly out of bounds to humans, so using drones allowed scientists to investigate hazardous places from a safe distance. UAVs also helped the team cover large areas quickly.

Dr Kieran Wood, from the University of Bristol, said: "Detecting the hotpots was a good demonstration of what can be achieved with drones rather than manned aerial surveys, or ground surveys."
