The DJI Inspire 1 is an amazing aircraft which is a complete aerial camera platform straight out of the box. It’s a fast and powerful quadcopter with a stabilised Ultra High Definition 4K camera.

It’s a drone which is suited to far more than moviemaking. The incredible photo and video quality means it’s great too for inspection and survey work. The camera can be removed and swapped with other sensors, which are already in development, so pretty soon thermal imaging with the Inspire will soon be a reality.

The DJI Inspire 1 is easy to fly and can hold its position both indoors and out thanks to DJI’s revolutionary Optical Flow sensors and a highly accurate Global Positioning System.

The aircraft and the camera can be controlled from the DJI Pilot app which runs on most popular smartphones and tablets. Everything from manual camera controls to flight mapping and even auto take-off and landing are just a tap away, with more functions and updates being developed all the time. And the camera’s pictures are displayed in 720p HD on a smartphone or tablet thanks to DJI’s Lightbridge technology. Where regulations allow the signal can be beamed from 1.2 miles (2km) away.*

* In the UK you will have to keep your Inspire within sight at all times and definitely no further than 500 metres away.

The Inspire’s camera lens consists of 9 elements in 9 groups including an aspherical element producing extreme clarity. The rectilinear lens, with a field of view of 94 degrees (20mm is the 35mm equivalent), means there is none of the ultra wide-angle distortion previously associated with drone cameras. Adobe DNG RAW support gives you the power to make every shot a masterpiece. Everything is better in 4K but the camera is also capable of shooting in Full HD (1080p).

DJI Inspire 1 has 4K video and 12mp stills

The DJI Inspire 1’s camera can be rotated a full 360 degrees so, regardless of which direction the aircraft is facing, you can turn the rock steady camera to frame your subject and then capture 12mp stills or video. The Inspire’s revolutionary transforming shape means that, once it’s in the air, the propellers, motors and arms lift up to produce a more stable profile. This also means that the camera has a clear, unobstructed view.

The controller, when combined with the app, has advanced controls which mean that video recordings can be stopped and started and stills can be taken with the press of a button or the tap of a screen.

USB and HDMI outputs mean the pictures can be shown on a wide range of TV screens, monitors and tablets. That’s great for showing clients or colleagues what you’re filming.

Heliguy can also provide an upgrade to the DJI Inspire 1 so that the pilot has a forward facing camera and a separate screen. The tiny First Person View (FPV) camera neatly fits into the nosecone of the aircraft and uses a self-contained and separately powered transmitter to beam pictures back to the pilot. This can be displayed on an extra, small screen attached to the controller or on a larger one on a tripod, depending on which way you prefer to work. You can select the FPV option on the drop down menu.

New Optical Flow technology uses downward facing sensors so that Inspire can lock onto the ground when there isn’t a strong enough GPS signal. And this technology really comes into its own when flying indoors. The sensors will hold the Inspire’s position in the absence of any satellites. It can also automatically transform the aircraft’s landing gear during the launch and landing phases.

Even if you’ve never flown before, taking off and landing your DJI Inspire 1 is easy and safe. It takes just one tap on the screen to make your Inspire 1 take-off and transform, ready to start filming. Then tap again to have it transform again and land. When GPS is available, the Home Point (the location you are standing) automatically refreshes, so your Inspire 1 always knows where you are even if you move around. When you tell it to come back, or in case of an emergency, it knows exactly where to go and land safely. As an alternative, which may be safer in some situations, you can choose the home point to be at the aircraft’s current position.

The Inspire 1 is powered by a fully integrated, intelligent battery. When in flight, the remaining battery power is shown live, letting you know how long you can continue to fly. Advanced algorithms calculate the distance of your aircraft and estimated time to return home, letting you know when it’s time to fly back. The battery tracks the voltage of each cell, the total lifetime charges and discharges, and the overall health and battery status. All this helps you to fly your Inspire 1 with confidence and to keep flying for years to come.
