Full Description

DJI Zenmuse X7 Camera and Gimbal

The Zenmuse X7 is the newest aerial camera with integrated gimbal from DJI. It is suitable for use with the DJI Inspire 2. This Super 35 camera provides stunning results, thanks to a 24MP CMOS sensor with 14 stops of dynamic range. This lets you capture incredible detail. You can capture 6K CinemaDNG footage and 5.2K Apple ProRes footage.

In addition, there's a new DL-Mount. This allows you to switch easily and swiftly between four different prime lenses which have been released with the X7.

Please Note - You'll need to purchase a lens in addition to this X7.

There is also a new DJI Cinema Colour System - which helps to keep colours accurate and assist in post-processing.

Zenmuse X7 Sensor Specs

DJI have produced a high-quality Super 35 sensor specifically for the X7 camera.

The improvements they've made in readout speed means that this camera can output RAW at 6K/30fps and 3.9K/60fps.

The sensor has a pixel size of 3.91 µm means you can capture every detail.

Key Features of the X7 Sensor

    • 14 stops of dynamic range

New DJI DL-Mount Details

The new DJI DL-Mount makes changing lenses a breeze.

FSI-Cu technology has been used to create a thinner interconnection. In practice, this means a compact lens mount without sacrificing any image quality.

The new DL-Mount system has a flange focal distance of less than 17mm - about 1/3 of the size of a PL-Mount.

The addition of this new mount has allowed DJI to save weight.

The X7 weighs just 630g with a lens. When you're flying with the Inspire 2 the total weight will be around 4kg.

Historically this level of detail and range of operation would have required much more expensive equipment.

Formats and Codecs on the X7 Camera

To give you total flexibility, the DJI Zenmuse X7 supports a wide array of codecs, resolutions and frame rates.

The CineCore image processing unit that we first saw being used when the Inspire 2 came out, has now been upgraded to version 2.1.

This adds the ability to shoot in 6K in CinemaDNG and 5.2k in Apple ProRes.

A new Rl mode has also been added. This can record high-quality footage at various sensitivity levels.

There have been upgrades to the noise and artefacts reduction systems.

In addition, there has been a new colour system added to the processing unit.

All of these updates and improvements means that CineCore 2.1 will give you total flexibility when it comes to both shooting and post-production.

DJI Zenmuse X7 FAQs

There are a number of questions that have already been asked since the Zenmuse X7 was announced.
We'll attempt to help you answer these below.

Is the Zenmuse X7 compatible with any other DJI products apart from the Inspire 2?

At present - no. For the time being the X7 will only be compatible with the Inspire 2 quadcopter. However, DJI have already stated that there are plans to create more products that are compatible with the X7 in the future.

Is the X7 compatible with the Inspire 1?

No - unfortunately not. It's unlikely to ever be compatible either - it's probably time to upgrade.

Why is the DL-Mount an improvement?

In simple terms - it reduces weight and size without sacrificing image quality.

What are the compatible lenses?

There are currently four X7 lenses available:

    • 16mm
    • 24mm
    • 35mm
    • 50mm

Does the X7 have a leaf shutter?

Yes. A leaf shutter is a big advantage as it helps to prevent rolling shutter and stripes, motion blur in high-action shots. Currently, the leaf shutter is only active in Single Shot mode.

Can I use third-party filters with the Zenmuse X7?

Yes - any 46mm diameter filter weighing lower than 12g and is 4.4mm and thinner (excluding threads) is compatible with the X7.

Do I need CineSSDs to use the Zenmuse X7?

While an SSD isn't necessary to use the X7 itself, it is to use any of the high-quality video formats. Basic imagery can be captured on a Micro SD. The CineSSD cannot be used without a Micro SD card also being added.

Which memory device will my imagery be stored on?

Any stills (apart from those shot in RAW Burst mode) and videos recorded in H.264 or H.265 will be stored on the SSD.

RAW burst shots and higher quality video footage is stored on the SSD.

Can I change the Lens Hood on the X7?

The lens hood is only suitable for use with official DJI lenses - so no third-party options are available at present.

Do I have to use the lens hood at all times?

The X7 will operate without a lens hood, but DJI have recommended using it in most scenarios to help avoid glare.

How do I use the dust removal function?

The X7 comes with a self-cleaning function.

Within the DJI GO 4 app, you'll be prompted when a clean is necessary. It will ask you to remove the lens, then the gimbal will face down and the cleaning cycle will start.

It only takes a few seconds.

What's the flight time when using the X7 with the DJI Inspire 2?

The flight time when using the Zenmuse X7 with your I2 is around 23 minutes.

In real-world terms, this may end up being closer to 20 minutes. But that's still more than enough time to capture the shots you need.

Buying extra TB50 batteries will extend your shoot too.

What is Super 35?

Super 35 is the industry standard sensor size in the cinematography world.

What are D-Log and D-Gamut?

These new colour modes have been introduced by DJI specifically for the X7.

D-Log obtains 15 stops of dynamic range, helping conserve more detail in shadow and more highlights.

D-Gamut provides a wider range of colours, covering DCI-P3, which provides a wider gamut colour space.

Both of these features work together to capture even more detailed shots with natural colours.
