The DJI Zenmuse Z3 is a gimbal and camera combo featuring the capability to perform a 3.5x optical zoom and also a 2x digital zoom. The Type 1/2.3 CMOS sensor allows you to shoot 4K video and take stills with 12MP quality. As with DJI's previous 3-axis gimbals, the Z3 is compatible with a range of DJI aircraft and can transmit a live HD stream DJI's GO app.
In the past, when you were out on an aerial shoot, achieving close-ups of your subject meant flying the drone towards it yourself. This is no longer the case. DJI's Zenmuse Z3 offers integrated aerial zoom functionality and is based on their X3 model. Optimised for still photography, users have access to a 7x zoom (which combines 3.5x optical and 2x digital lossless zoom) providing a focal length ranging from 22mm to 77mm. These specifications make it an ideal choice for a range of industrial applications.
When shooting at the highest possible resolution (4K video or 12MP photos) optical zoom can be used, with the image instantly visible via the DJI GO live feed. If the user is shooting in 1080p, the lossless zoom functionality allows for the maximum 7x zoom level without sacrificing any image quality.
Adding an additional layer of control to the Z3 is a purpose built reaction wheel. This works alongside the normal yaw motor to allow for more refined and stable movements.
DJI's Zenmuse Z3 features the same Sony 1/2.3" sensor as the DJI Inspire 1 V2.0 and DJI Phantom 4. This ensures that the image quality remains class-leading. You're given even more control with Adobe DNG RAW support which allows for advanced image editing.
The ability to zoom in-flight creates many new opportunities to streamline and enhance industrial and commercial drone use, from structural inspection to use by emergency services. It also provides aerial photographers more control over their composition.
Getting started with the Z3 is as easy as connecting it to a model such as the DJI Inspire 1 or Matrice 600. Once attached, it operates seamlessly with the DJI Lightbridge and Lightbridge 2 found on these platforms to provide up to 5km of HD transmission range. Aircraft setup can be accelerated using the DJI SDK to create automation protocols that maximise efficiency.
Flight times, when used with a DJI Inspire 1, can reach up to 19 minutes. It can achieve 30 minutes when flying a dual-battery equipped Matrice 100 and 39 minutes on the Matrice 600. These generous flight times increase the efficiency of industrial projects while also giving photographers additional time to plan for the right lighting and composition to capture the perfect shot.
DJI’s GO app is integrated with the Zenmuse Z3, acting as a live feed to see the images being transmitted and also as the primary control system. It can be used to change camera settings such as swiping to zoom in and out, switching between photo and video modes and activating the accessible Intelligent Flight Modes. Total camera functionality, as well as the additional zoom provided by the Z3, can also be controlled via the aircraft's Remote Controller.
