MAWWFRS: The DJI Zenmuse XT thermal camera is a hugely important tool for the department when paired with the Inspire 1 platform. At nearly all incidents, following an optical view of the site, we default to using the XT to cross reference the images. This has been invaluable for us at the scene of numerous fires and when looking for missing persons, as we can immediately identify key target areas to focus on that we would not get with an optical view only.
Recently, we attended a large tyre fire whereby we were putting water on the source of smoke emission, however, the Zenmuse XT clearly identified where the hotspots were. As these were not where we were directing the water, this tool proved exceptionally useful and allowed us to work with National Resources Wales (Environmental Agency) and limit the amount of water we put on the fire, avoiding unnecessary pollution.
From a Fire Service end user point of view, a utopian scenario would be having an integral optical and thermal camera which could be switched between during operation, however with the XT coupled with our existing optical equipment, there’s very little room for improvement.
The XT is intuitive and easy to use; the functionality of the colour pallets allows us to select which is the best fit for any individual incident. The benefits are realised immediately on an incident ground where thermal images can be shown to staff which, in turn, assists the Incident Commander with their tactical plan to deal with the incident.
The standard of service from Heliguy has been second to none, they have always reacted to any issues we have had and been there to support us during the entire time MAWWFRS has used the DJI Inspire 1 and Zenmuse XT platform.
