Drones for Agriculture Training

heliguy™, in partnership with Drone AG, are offering a two-day training course on how to utilise your DJI drone as a tool for farming.

The course is made up of classroom-based presentations and resources, as well as hands-on practical sessions on a working farm. You will learn how to collect aerial data that can be translated into real-world results on your farm.

The course has been created by farmers and drone operators with over ten years’ experience in the sector.

The Drones for Agriculture Training is a BASIS registered course. Earn 12 CPD points.

As of September, the course will also carry a Lantra Certificate of attendance.

What’s Covered in this Course?

  • Aerial drone mapping on the farm
  • Drone laws and safety
  • Flight planning and checklists
  • Data exporting and analysis
  • Drone data applications

Course Schedule

The course is delivered across two days covering the following subjects:

Day One

Mapping Basics - This section will help guide you through the process of mapping with your drone. We will cover all stages from preparing your drone, through to planning and completing the flight.

Crop Scouting and GAI - In this module, we will detail the process of exporting and analysing the data captured with your drone.

Day Two

Measurement Tools - This module will cover how to obtain detailed measurements for CS/RPA and insurance detailing flight planning, analysis and data exporting and sharing.

Planning and Inspection - In this module, we will cover how we will provide details on how in-map measurements, photography and 3D modelling can allow you to check buildings for damage, plan developments and share data with relevant parties.

Training Locations

This drones in agriculture course is delivered at two locations:

East Lilburn - Northumberland

Training is based in East Lilburn Farms in northern Northumberland. The site is located on a 6000 acre, working family farm with facilities on site.

Norfolk

Delivered at our partner farm, from September 2018, we will be offering a training course in Norfolk.

FAQs

Do I need a drone to take the course?

No - we can lend you a drone if you don’t already own one.

Will I need to purchase any software separately?

The software we use is free of charge for a basic version, however, paid versions are available for greater functionality.

Do I need anything for the course?

You’ll need to bring along a smartphone or tablet to download the appropriate software.

I have a drone but it’s not DJI; can I still use it for farming?

We primarily focus on DJI drones due to their expansive capabilities. The course is still available for the theoretical learning aspect.

What happens if we can’t fly due to the weather?

We use a combination of a drone simulator and out on the field ground demonstrations.

Is drone law covered?

Yes - we will provide an overview of the applicable drone rules and regulations.

Are there any exams I need to take?

No - learning is not assessed using exams. Learning is a combination or practical and classroom-based delivery.

Does the course cover arable and pastoral farming?

The course is predominantly based towards arable farming, however, the skills learnt are transferable.

I haven’t flown a drone before. Can I still take the course?

Having some hands-on experience prior to the course will be beneficial, however, it’s possible to learn the processes used in farming.
