3DGS Tour of Newcastle Grey Street Created with XGRIDS PortalCam and LCC
The Heliguy Survey Team take the XGRIDS PortalCam out for the first time to create a 3DGS tour of Newcastle Grey Street
Our Survey Team was eager to take the XGRIDS PortalCam out into the field to see what this 3DGS handheld device could do, and we’re very pleased with the results.
Alex Williams, Technical Geospatial Specialist at Heliguy said:
“We’re really impressed with the detail of the assets captured with the XGRIDS PortalCam. We had high expectations, and they’ve been met.“
The simple workflow, high-quality models, and wide range of applications – from real estate and video games to film production and heritage site mapping – make it stand out.
I see the PortalCam and LCC workflow as both the next step in Gaussian Splat evolution and a gateway for new users who are interested in 3DGS but unsure where to start.”
Check out this 3DGS of Newcastle Grey Street, shot with the PortalCam and processed in Lixel CyberColor (LCC).
The video speaks for itself. The detail the Survey Team captured was unmatched. Unlike similar workflows, such as Matterport, the PortalCam is not limited to a single fixed-point view. With the PortalCam, you can create a more fluid and lifelike walkthrough by moving the camera around the space as you scan, giving virtual tours greater depth and realism. Plus it's ultra-portable, weighing under 900g with a compact frame that makes it easy to carry for both indoor and outdoor use.
Alex Williams, Technical Geospatial Specialist at Heliguy shares:
“The PortalCam makes scanning for extended periods much easier. It’s designed to be lightweight and comfortable to hold, making it effortless to manoeuvre around surroundings and zoom in for better detail. With the built-in tripod making it easy to place down when starting and stopping scans.”
The multi-camera system of the PortalCam combines dual front (180° x 150°) and dual fisheye (200° x 200°) 12MP cameras to deliver enhanced HD detail for photorealistic 3D models.
An onboard AI processing unit, with GPU and IMU support, handles automated data processing quickly, reducing workflow time and making it easier to fine-tune the final output.
Alex Williams, Technical Geospatial Specialist at Heliguy states:
“With the PortalCam, much of the behind-the-scenes editing is done automatically as you scan, so when it comes to working with your Gaussian Splat data, you can focus on fine-tuning the details you want, with the heavy lifting already taken care of.”
Additionally, with the PortalCam and Lixel CyberColor workflow, you get a fully interactive and more dynamic experience, along with advanced editing tools in LCC. Better yet, a one year subscription to LCC is included in your PortalCam purchase.
Alex Williams, Technical Geospatial Specialist at Heliguy said:
“The PortalCam and LCC workflow is built for creating top-quality 3DGS models. LCC remains simple to use while rendering high-quality assets.”
The PortalCam is available in two options: the Standard Kit, which includes essential extras and a one-year LCC subscription, and the Premium Kit, which adds extra batteries and a Premium one-year LCC subscription. The Premium LCC subscription includes advanced spatial recognition with HD enhancement, Revit plugin integration, a developer SDK for custom solutions, and comprehensive spatial analysis tools.
