Automated drone roof inspection with DJI Manifold 3

Automated drone roof inspection with DJI Manifold 3

How the DJI Manifold 3 enables automated drone roof inspections with the DJI Matrice 4E and creates detailed 3D models for measurements and assessment.

This dataset demonstrates how the DJI Matrice 4E and Manifold 3 can enhance drone-based roof inspection - enabling automated data collection in complex environments and producing a detailed model.

Manifold 3 unlocks real-time spatial mapping and automatic route planning in unknown environments.

This enables it to:

  • Build a spatial understanding of the structure during flight.

  • Generate optimised capture paths.

  • Hug and follow the geometry of the asset.

  • Maintain close proximity to complex surfaces - increasing detail, and reducing operational footprint compared to alternative drone-based data-collection methods,

Ben Ford, of Wight Drone, shared the data with heliguy™ and praised Manifold 3's performance.

He said: "I was impressed with the capture process using the Manifold 3. It sped up my time on site compared to manual capture and investigation, and given the area I was operating, I did not have to overfly like with Smart 3D Capture. "The model is clear, and I was able to produce a report directly from the data."

Drones are a great tool for roof inspections, reducing the need to work at height, enabling faster data collection, and offering high-resolution and repeatable insights.

Aerial photographs are good, but drone-captured 3D models provide further benefits, such as spatial context and the ability to perform accurate measurements.

And the ability to conduct automated mapping with tools like Manifold 3 yields further gains.

By combining autonomous flight, geometry-aware capture, and detailed modelling, operators can deliver better insights while reducing time on site.
