Smart 3D Capture vs Smart Oblique Capture for DJI drone surveys
Side-by-side comparison of data collected with the DJI Zenmuse P1, using Smart 3D Capture on the DJI M400 and Smart Oblique Capture on the DJI M300 RTK.
This video shows how Smart 3D Capture on the DJI M400 can help produce higher-fidelity 3D models compared to using Smart Oblique Capture with the DJI M300 RTK.
The M400 also collected the data more efficiently - despite collecting triple the number of images.
And it demonstrates the advantages of using Smart 3D Capture to map complex structures in tight environments.
The comparison was compiled by Network Rail asset engineer Ken Durling - using the DJI Zenmuse P1 with 50mm lens to map the bridge in the Manea area, before processing the data through DJI Terra.
Smart Oblique Capture vs Smart 3D Capture
Smart Oblique and Smart 3D Capture are two survey techniques that can be conducted with the P1 - although the latter method is only available when using the M400.
Smart Oblique allows the P1 to automatically capture nadir and angled images in one flight, with denser image collection over the centre of the survey area. However, a draw-back is that it has to fly further away from the subject to achieve correct angled perspectives (typically 45° oblique shots).

In contrast, Smart 3D Capture creates an automated, object-focused flight path around a structure, enabling the P1 to take images closer to the mapping area and from all necessary angles for precise 3D modelling. It is particularly suited to streamlining surveys on complex assets.
And Ken believes Smart 3D Capture’s ability to fly closer while collecting more images gives it the edge - and is especially useful for space-limited situations.
He said: “The M400’s Smart 3D Capture route enabled the drone to rise, rotate and take five multi-angle images at each point. This kept the aircraft close to the structure and allowed for sharper, cleaner results with well-defined edges and form.

“In comparison, the M300 was flown on a Smart Oblique route, which requires the drone to stand off further to achieve the same angle coverage, which is not always practical in built-up or constrained areas.”

Reflecting on the level of detail obtained with the M400, supplied by heliguy™, Ken added: “It opens a new layer of insight that was previously out of reach, and we’re able to capture things that we’ve never seen before, such as base plates and chalk marks in the rails.
“It goes to show that for environments like rail, where space is limited and detail matters, route design is just as important as the hardware itself.”
