XGRIDS has launched the PortalCam, its first handheld device designed for reality capture. Using Gaussian splatting technology, it creates highly detailed and interactive 3D environments quickly and with minimal effort.
The PortalCam combines LiDAR, a four-camera array, and automated processing to deliver photorealistic spatial models that can be explored, edited, and shared across platforms. Its applications are wide-ranging.
From real estate virtual walkthroughs to film and virtual production, and even personal events such as weddings and birthdays, the PortalCam makes professional-grade 3D capture accessible to everyone.
In this blog, we’ll explore the PortalCam’s key features, how it works, and its real-world uses.
Key features of the XGRIDS PortalCam
The PortalCam is the first handheld device built specifically for 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) models. It combines LiDAR, a four-camera system, and onboard AI processing to deliver accurate, photorealistic 3D scans.
With a lightweight design under 900g and simple software integration through XGRIDS LCC, it’s portable, efficient, and ready to use across industries.

Core specifications:
LiDAR: 856k pts/s, 60m range, 180° × 180° coverage
Cameras: 4 × 12MP (2 front, 2 fisheye)
Processing: Onboard GPU, IMU, AI algorithms
Capture speed: 200 m² in 15 minutes
Model generation: Complete within 5 hours
Its true spatial camera combines LiDAR, an AI processing unit, and a multi-camera system for accurate and reliable scans. The LiDAR handles complex structures with a capture rate of 856k pts/s, a 60m range, and 180° x 180° coverage.
The onboard AI processing unit includes an IMU, GPU, and advanced algorithms for automated data handling. The four-camera system—two front cameras (180° x 150°) and two fisheye cameras (200° x 200°), each at 12MP—delivers high-fidelity, photorealistic detail.
The PortalCam is designed for fast and reliable 3D reality capture.
It can scan up to 200 m² in just 15 minutes, with full model generation in as little as five hours. The lightweight, handheld design makes it adaptable to both indoor and outdoor environments.

What sets the PortalCam apart from the Lixel scanners
These two technologies serve different purposes.
To create interactive 3D models that prioritise realism and engagement, the PortalCam is the right tool. For surveying and achieving highly accurate measurements, the Lixel scanners are the better choice, purpose-built for professional surveyors.
The Lixel L2 Pro and K1 are tailored to industries where precision is critical, such as surveying, engineering, and construction. Using LiDAR and SLAM, they generate highly accurate point clouds that capture the exact geometry of objects and spaces, making them ideal for measurement, analysis, and as-built documentation.

By contrast, the PortalCam is built around 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS). Its focus is on visual fidelity and rapid content generation for VR, AR, virtual film production, and digital marketing. While it can create accurate models, its strength lies in producing immersive, interactive environments rather than delivering the geometric precision demanded in professional surveying.
Regarding workflows, the PortalCam and Lixel scanners do differ slightly. Where the Lixel scanners can be used with both the LCC and Lixel Studio - the PortalCam can only be used with the LCC software.
So for point cloud processing, you’ll need to use the XGRIDS K1 or L2 Pro.

Easy to follow workflow
With the PortalCam, the workflow is simple: walk and scan, process the data automatically in XGRIDS LCC software, then view, edit, and share.
The PortalCam outputs ready-to-use, high-quality 3D models that retain fine detail while reducing file sizes by up to 90%. It performs reliably in complex environments, handling dark areas, reflective surfaces, high-contrast scenes, and structures with minimal features.

Through LCC software, users can measure, annotate, edit, and share across multiple platforms, including Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Apple devices, and Android.
For extended workflows, the PortalCam integrates seamlessly with Unreal Engine, Unity, and WebGL via SDK.
How the PortalCam workflow compares to other methods
The PortalCam delivers true 3D spatial models faster and more easily than methods like a 360° camera and tripod. It combines quick capture times, coverage of both interiors and exteriors, and the freedom to navigate spaces naturally — offering a level of depth and flexibility unmatched by other approaches.
PortalCam vs 360° Camera + Tripod vs Phone 3D Scanning vs DSLR Photos
PortalCam | 360° Camera + Tripod | Phone 3D Scanning | DSLR Photos | |
Quality | True 3D spatial models | Flat panoramas on spheres | Pixelated depth maps | Static 2D images or broken 3D mesh |
Speed per 3000 sq ft/280m² | 15-20 minutes | 3-4 hours | Limited to small objects and rooms | Multiple sessions needed |
Coverage | Interior + Exterior | Interior only | Small objects only | Single viewpoints |
Navigation | Walk freely through space | Fixed tripod positions | Can't navigate | No exploration |
