Ofqual Level 5 UAS Operations Manager

Ofqual-regulated TQUK UAS Operations Manager Qualification

Leading a drone team requires careful governance, management and due diligence.

The Level 5 Award is designed to drive up standards, raising the bar of what is expected from accountable managers, enabling them to confidently oversee robust, safe and effective drone operations.

This includes managing the deployment of commercial drone pilots on large and complex missions, handling flight logs, and auditing and maintaining on-site equipment.

Topics covered include:

  • UAS Operations Manager responsibilities, including hazard and safety management and operational oversight
  • Flight safety meetings
  • Aircraft maintenance
  • Auditing processes

The Level 5 Award also consists of an optional additional module covering EVLOS flights. Topics include pre-and-post-flight EVLOS procedures, operating during an EVLOS mission, and EVLOS flight safety.

Upon completion of the course, successful learners can progress to other qualifications such as Operational Planning procedures with a written Operating Safety Case (OSC) and can apply for job roles such as UAS Operations Managers.

Do I need to have experience of flying drones to sit the Ofqual Level 5 Award?

No, you do not. The Level 5 Award is aimed at professionals who will be responsible for leading drone programmes/teams, instead of operating the drones directly.

Therefore, no experience is needed. This means that candidates do not require an A2 CofC/GVC to attend the course.

There is also no practical flight assessment as part of the Level 5 course.

heliguy™ runs a Level 4 Award. Do I need to do this before the Level 5 course?

No, you do not. The Level 5 Award is completely different to the Level 4 Award. Therefore, candidates can bypass the Level 4 and go straight to the Level 5 Award.

Is the Level 5 course eligible for Enhanced Learning Credits?

Yes it is. The course is eligible for Enhanced Learning Credits, with 80% of the costs covered by ELC and 20% by the learner.
