Why is a drone bound to an account?

DJI drones are tied to user accounts primarily for security and operational control. Binding a drone to an account helps prevent theft and unauthorised use, as certain features, such as firmware updates, geofencing permissions, and advanced flight capabilities, may be restricted without proper account verification.

This system also allows DJI to provide personalised services, including flight logs, warranty tracking, and device management through apps like DJI Fly or DJI Pilot. While beneficial for the original owner, this linkage becomes a barrier when ownership changes. If a drone remains bound to a previous account, the new user may face activation locks or limited functionality.
