Automated drone surveys enhance Network Rail inspections

Network Rail is using Smart 3D Capture with the DJI M400 and P1 camera to automate survey workflows to collect detailed data while remaining compliant.

These images show the value of refining data capture methods to deliver application-specific outputs — while remaining compliant.

The dataset was captured by Network Rail asset manager Ken Durling using Smart 3D Capture with the DJI M400 and DJI Zenmuse P1 camera.

It follows the development of an automated workflow that fully adheres to Network Rail flight proximity permissions.

The result: A compliant flight route that still delivers an exceptionally detailed 3D mesh.

Ken says: “The level of resolution enables close observation of weld locations, rail identification markers within the web of the rail, and markings used to identify fault rectifications.

"This represents a meaningful step forward for rail inspections, achieving a very low GSD while significantly reducing the need for boots on ballast and exposure to the operational railway environment.”

The model was processed in DJI Terra. Thanks to Ken for sharing the data with us.
