Having completed the course, we caught up with Darren to find out more.

Why Darren took the Level 5 Award for UAS Operations Managers course

For Darren, the decision to enrol in the Level 5 Award was driven by responsibility and progression.

Working as a remote pilot and drone manager in Natural History TV, he regularly operates in remote, environmentally sensitive, and complex locations.

With that comes a high level of accountability - not just for capturing footage, but for ensuring operations are safe, compliant, and well-managed.

“I wanted to make sure my knowledge and decision-making matched that level of responsibility,” he said.

He also recognised the growing importance of regulation within the industry, particularly when supporting mixed teams of in-house pilots and freelancers.

“The regulatory side is only getting more important, so I felt it was the right time to properly get to grips with UK CAA requirements, not just for myself, but so I can better support productions,” he added.

Alongside this, the course offered a way to formalise his experience and add professional weight to his role.

A course that delivers real-world value

For Darren, one of the standout aspects of the course was its immediate relevance.

Rather than feeling like a box-ticking exercise, the training combined classroom learning with practical workbooks, ensuring everything could be applied directly to real-world operations.

“It felt relevant straight away, which isn’t always the case with courses like this.”

The course has helped Darren develop a more structured approach to planning and risk, while also strengthening his understanding of regulatory requirements.

He said: “The main things I took away were around planning and risk - just being more structured and deliberate in how you approach each job.”

Darren also valued the opportunity to learn alongside other professionals in the industry, in a supportive environment fostered by the heliguy™ instructors.

He said: “You don’t often get the chance to sit with people from different parts of the industry and compare how they’re doing things. There was a lot of useful discussion around real situations.

“The instructors were great: very open, happy to answer anything, and they gave people space to talk things through.”

Impact on drone operations and career

Darren says the Level 5 Award will benefit his day-to-day work and wider career.

The qualification has enhanced his confidence when planning and delivering complex drone operations, particularly in the demanding world of Natural History filmmaking.

“It’s given me a bit more confidence, especially when it comes to planning more complex shoots.”

It also adds a layer of credibility when working with production teams and external collaborators.

“It shows there’s a recognised level of training behind what you’re doing, not just experience. In this line of work, that reassurance does go a long way,” he said.

Applying the learning in the field

Darren has already started integrating what he learned into his workflow.

“I’ve started tightening up planning, risk assessments, and documentation, and generally been more consistent.”

He’s also placing greater emphasis on pre-site decision-making, particularly around airspace and safety.

Darren said: “It’s made me think more carefully about airspace and safety decisions before getting on site, rather than figuring things out as you go.

“In Natural History, filming every location is different, so having a solid framework in place really helps. TV and film are about getting the shot. This course enables that to happen safely and while adhering to the regulations.”

Who should consider the Level 5 drone course?

Darren believes the course offers 'clear value', especially to those operating in more complex environments.

“It also helps build confidence across the team, especially when you’re working in more challenging environments.

“For the kind of work that we do, it has been a really solid investment.”
