Finding dogs from above: how drones are transforming dog rescue

Since the adoption of drone technology, local communities on the Isle of Man have seen measurable success in locating and recovering missing dogs.

Drones are transforming how missing dogs are found. Noodle’s Canine Rescue integrates drone technology into its operations to search vast, challenging terrain more efficiently, improve coordination on the ground, and increase the chances of successful recovery in time-critical situations.

Key takeaways

  • Drone technology has become a core part of Noodle’s Canine Rescue’s operations, improving search speed and coordination.

  • Thermal drones such as DJI Matrice 4T enable teams to cover vast, difficult terrain more efficiently, especially in low-visibility conditions.

  • Drone deployment has directly contributed to successful recoveries, including time-critical cases like Toffee.

  • heliguy™ has supported the team with equipment, training, and ongoing guidance, enabling effective adoption and deployment of drone technology in real-world rescue scenarios.

Client insights

"Drones - especially thermal ones - have transformed Noodle’s Canine Rescue by dramatically speeding up search times, covering large and difficult terrain efficiently, and increasing the chances of locating missing dogs within the critical early hours."

- Karen Quayle, founder of Noodle’s Canine Rescue.

A dachshund named Toffee was found after going missing for three days in the Isle of Man, in what was described as “a needle in a haystack situation.”

The search was led by volunteers from Noodle’s Canine Rescue and supported by emergency services, landowners, and the public. However, the challenging terrain, made worse by wind and rain, complicated efforts and slowed rescue progress.

The breakthrough came when a sighting was reported and Noodle’s Canine Rescue deployed their drone team. From above, the drone provided real-time visibility, allowing the team to track Toffee’s movement and direct ground searchers with precision. This aerial support proved decisive, enabling Toffee’s owners to recover him safely.

For Noodle’s Canine Rescue, it was another example of how “having an eye in the sky” can make a critical difference in complex searches where time and conditions are working against you.

Noodle’s Canine Rescue: From Ground Search to Drone Support

Noodle’s Canine Rescue is a volunteer-led organisation focused on locating and recovering missing dogs across the Isle of Man, combining coordinated ground searches with drone-assisted aerial support.

The team first explored drone technology during the search for a missing dog named Elvis, using a rented DJI Mavic 3 Thermal supplied by heliguy™. The introduction of thermal imaging allowed them to detect heat signatures and search large areas more efficiently, particularly in low-visibility conditions.

Karen said:

"At Noodle’s Canine Rescue, our mission has always been simple: reunite lost dogs with their families. In recent years, that mission has quite literally taken flight through our partnership with heliguy, giving us a powerful new perspective in the search for missing pets across the Isle of Man."

With guidance and support from heliguy™, the organisation transitioned from renting to purchasing its own DJI Matrice 4T, enabling faster deployment and greater flexibility during time-critical searches. Learn more about their journey here.

Since then, drone technology has become an established part of their operations, supporting more targeted searches and improved coordination on the ground.

Operational workflow

At Noodle’s Canine Rescue, a drone-assisted search typically follows a structured process:

  1. A missing dog is reported

  2. Initial assessment is carried out (terrain, weather, risk)

  3. Ground and drone teams are coordinated

  4. Drone deployment is initiated where conditions allow

  5. Aerial search is conducted using thermal and visual sensors

  6. Ground teams are guided to the location for recovery

Results in the field

The use of drone technology within Noodle’s Canine Rescue has progressed from initial trials to a more structured part of its operations.

Following its introduction in June 2025, Noodle’s Canine Rescue deployed drones in 8 of the 14 searches that required active ground operations that year, directly contributing to the location of 2 missing dogs. In this period of learning and experimentation, the team became more familiar with integrating drone support into their operations and was already beginning to see tangible results.

By early 2026, drone deployment had become more consistent. As of late March, Noodles Canine Rescue responded to 6 active searches, using the drone in half of them. Within less than 3 months, it assisted in locating 2 missing dogs, including the recovery of Toffee.

Real missions, real impact

The rescue of Toffee captured the attention of the local community, but it is just one of many real-world cases where drone support has played a critical role in reuniting missing dogs with their owners.

Bruce: rapid detection in open terrain

Bruce went missing near open fields and disused railway lines. After ground teams searched for over an hour, the drone conducted a coastal safety check before scanning farmland. Within just 10 minutes, Bruce was located lying in a field, allowing rescuers to guide his owners directly to him.

Scooby: assessing hazardous terrain

Scooby, missing near cliffs in Laxey, required immediate prioritisation to rule out dangerous terrain. The drone located him within three hours, in some overgrowth, and in the absence of the owner, the pilot safely carried out the recovery.

Millie: supporting multi-agency recovery

Millie was found in one of the most challenging situations—stranded on a cliffside near Dhoon Glen. After extensive searching, the drone identified her position, allowing rescuers to coordinate with the coastguard for a safe recovery.

How drone technology supports dog rescue

Addressing operational challenges

Search efforts are often constrained by limited visibility, large search areas, and difficult terrain. On the Isle of Man, rapidly changing weather and airspace restrictions add further complexity, slowing response times, especially in the critical early hours.

Thermal capability and aerial visibility

Thermal imaging has significantly improved search effectiveness. By detecting heat signatures, drones can identify animals in low-light conditions and across wide areas. Rather than replacing ground teams, they provide aerial oversight, supporting faster decisions and more targeted searches.

Karen said,

“Using thermal drones was a real game-changer. It helped us cut through the background noise and focus on heat signatures, instead of getting lost in the details.”

Operational benefits

  • Efficiency: Drones enable large areas to be scanned far more quickly than ground searches alone.

  • Coverage: Aerial access allows teams to assess cliffs, farmland, and other hard-to-reach areas without unnecessary risk.

  • Coordination: Live aerial visibility enables real-time direction of ground teams, reducing time spent on low-probability areas and improving response to sightings.

Key features of SAR drones

  • Thermal imaging: Enables detection of heat signatures, making it easier to locate people and animals in low-light conditions, dense vegetation, or across large search areas.

  • High zoom capability: Allows operators to assess terrain, identify movement, and confirm sightings from a safe distance.

  • Environmental durability: Higher IP ratings (e.g. IP55) support operations in challenging weather, including wind and light rain.

  • Portability and setup time: Compact, foldable systems allow for rapid deployment in time-sensitive search scenarios.

Best drones for search and rescue

  • DJI Matrice 4TD: Rugged, IP55-rated drone with 54-minute flight time and advanced thermal payload.

  • DJI Matrice 4T: A versatile six-module drone with thermal, zoom, and AI recognition, ideal for locating targets in complex environments.

  • DJI Mavic 3T Enterprise Thermal: A compact, cost-effective option available with a 640x512 thermal sensor. Highly capable for smaller teams needing portability.

  • DJI Dock 3 with M4TD: Automated, vehicle-mountable solution for BVLOS search and rescue missions.

Looking ahead

As its drone operations continue to develop, Noodle’s Canine Rescue is now certified to operate in more complex environments, including night operations and areas near restricted airspace. The team is also exploring the introduction of additional platforms, such as the DJI Matrice 4TD, to improve resilience in challenging weather conditions.

As the team continues to learn and adapt, their focus remains on refining their approach and helping reunite more dogs with their owners, even in difficult search scenarios.

Conclusion

The integration of drone technology has strengthened the ability of Noodle’s Canine Rescue to locate and recover missing dogs more efficiently. By improving visibility, expanding coverage, and supporting real-time coordination, drones have become a valuable component of modern search operations.
