How private 5G networks enhance drone-in-a-box operations

heliguy™ and Boldyn Networks test private 5G to deliver faster data, low latency, and strong security during DJI Dock 3 drone operations.

  • heliguy™ and Boldyn Networks have collaborated to demonstrate how private 5G connectivity can enhance DJI Dock 3 operations;

  • The test was staged at the Port of Blyth, utilising Boldyn's private 5G network and conducted by heliguy™'s in-house accredited Dock technicians;

  • Benefits of a private 5G network include high-speed data transfer, ultra-low latency, enhanced security and reliability, and scalable operations;

  • The trial demonstrated how 5G can underpin automated drone systems, powering smart cities, connected infrastructure, and advanced aerial workflows.

heliguy™ has partnered with Boldyn Networks - a global leader in private networks and shared communications infrastructure - to demonstrate how 5G connectivity can transform automated drone operations.

The test, held at the Port of Blyth where Boldyn has deployed a 5G Innovation lab enabled by a private 5G network, showcased the DJI Dock 3 operating over a private 5G network, revealing how faster data speeds, ultra-low latency, and enhanced security can unlock new possibilities for remote drone deployments.

The test was conducted by heliguy™'s in-house accredited DJI Dock technicians.

What is a private 5G network?

A private 5G network uses the same technology as public 5G (ie fast, low-latency wireless connectivity), but instead of being run by a mobile carrier, it is owned or managed by a single organisation. This network is isolated from public cellular infrastructure, operated on dedicated spectrum.

Lightning-fast data transmission

5G’s hallmark advantage is its speed. By leveraging 5G connectivity, DJI Dock 3 can transmit large volumes of mission data — including high-resolution imagery and telemetry — to operators in near real-time.

For industries relying on timely information, such as infrastructure inspection, environmental monitoring, or public safety, this means quicker access to insights and faster decision-making.

Low latency for real-time control

Traditional networks can introduce noticeable lag between command and response. 5G changes that with ultra-low latency, allowing for instant feedback loops between the Dock, the drone, and the operator.

This ensures smoother live streaming, faster mission execution, and precise control — vital in situations where every second counts, such as emergency response or rapid incident assessment.

Secure, reliable connectivity through private 5G

The test utilised Boldyn Networks’ private 5G infrastructure, which provides a dedicated and secure communication environment.

Unlike public mobile networks, private 5G offers complete control over access, bandwidth, and data routing, a critical factor for sectors managing sensitive information.

This means organisations can confidently operate DJI Dock 3 systems while meeting the highest standards of data protection, compliance, and operational reliability.

Scalable, future-ready drone operations

5G also enables scalability. With the ability to connect multiple devices simultaneously, operators can manage several Docks or drones across vast areas, all under one centralised network.

This lays the groundwork for large-scale, autonomous drone programmes — a key step towards the future of smart cities, connected infrastructure, and automated aerial services.

In summary

The heliguy™–Boldyn test proved that pairing DJI Dock 3 with 5G connectivity delivers tangible benefits:

  • Faster data flow for rapid insights.

  • Ultra-low latency for responsive control.

  • Enhanced security via private 5G networks.

  • Greater scalability for multi-dock, multi-drone operations.

As drone technology continues to evolve, 5G will be the backbone that enables truly autonomous, connected, and intelligent aerial systems.

Boldyn Networks continues to pioneer private 5G deployments that unlock autonomous capabilities across industries.
