Overview

The one-day Drone Maintenance Course involves theory training and practical exercises. It is delivered in a face-to-face format and is tailored to DJI Enterprise aircraft - specifically the DJI M350 RTK, M30 Series, and Mavic 3 Enterprise Series.

The course covers:

  • Maintenance Legalities: Understand your responsibilities when it comes to drone maintenance procedures - keeping you and your team PDRA-01 compliant. This is essential for auditing processes.

  • Develop Good Habits: Learn about product life spans, replacement intervals, maintenance procedures, safe handling, and how to effectively use the manufacturer's maintenance manuals.

  • Become A Maintenance Master: Equip yourself with the knowledge to identify and classify faults, replace components, calibrate sensors, and update firmware. This keeps your fleet in working order and gives you the confidence to diagnose and resolve issues.

  • Component Deep-dive: Covers motors, props, ESCs, batteries, flight controller, sensors, antenna, and electrical components.

  • Practical Assessment: Learn, practice, and perform key skills that are essential to drone maintenance.

Course Syllabus

Learning objectives

The course covers three core elements. These are:

  • Understand the legal requirements for drone maintenance.

  • Understand the key knowledge required to conduct drone maintenance.

  • Demonstrate practical skills required for drone maintenance.

The theory aspect of the course will take place in the morning. The hands-on practical exercises will be held in the afternoon after lunch.

Legal Requirements For RPAS Maintenance

Stay compliant and adhere to your risk assessment

This module covers the legal and regulatory guidelines for the maintenance of UAS operations for UK PDRA-01 operations in the Specific Category.

This understanding will help you comply with Article 241 of the Air Navigation Order 2016 - which states that a person must not recklessly or negligently cause or permit an aircraft to endanger any person or property.

You will learn:

  • The responsibilities of the operator, in accordance to UK Reg (EU) 2019/947;

  • The requirements for maintenance for UK-PDRA-01 operations;

  • The manufacturer's maintenance requirements and how to effectively use the manuals provided;

  • The competency requirement to conduct maintenance procedures.

  • How to log and record the data for auditing purposes.

Maintenance Skills

How to conduct essential maintenance

The next part of the course equips operators with the necessary knowledge to conduct UAS maintenance.

Learn about mechanical and electrical aspects of the drone; key components, such as motors, props, ESCs, batteries, the flight controller, sensors, and antenna; and how to conduct important maintenance.

You will cover:

  • How to identify faults;

  • The procedure for replacing components;

  • Common issues, including props, sensors, folding arm mechanisms, and payload locking mechanisms; known failure modes; life span of parts and components; replacement intervals; and how to look for wear and tear;

  • How to check and update firmware;

  • How to calibrate sensors.

Hands-on Practical

Demonstrate your skills

The final part of the course comprises a series of practical exercises, with support from our training team.

This gives you the chance to put into action what you have learnt during the theory aspect of the course and enables you to practice and perform key skills that are essential to performing maintenance procedures.

You will:

  • Perform a visual-tactile inspection of a number of drones and identify faults;

  • Remove and fit drone propellers, using the correct tools and adjusting the torque to the correct spec;

  • Check the firmware version of the aircraft. Either roll back to a previous firmware or update to the latest version;

  • Calibrate the IMU, compass, and vision system.
