Piloted vs docked: The deciding factor
Before comparing cameras and sensors, this is the point to settle first.
The Matrice 5T is a conventional enterprise drone. A pilot carries it to site, unfolds it and flies it with the DJI RC Plus 3 Enterprise. That makes it a good fit for teams that need to respond wherever an incident or job takes them.
The Matrice 5TD is essentially a Dock 4 drone. It is designed to be permanently installed, launching, landing and swapping batteries automatically, with missions managed remotely through DJI FlightHub 2.
It will support an emergency controller mode in a future firmware update using the DJI RC Plus 2, but this will be limited to basic manual flight control and live streaming. It is not designed to be packed in a case and flown as a standalone drone.
In practice:
Choose the Matrice 5T if you need a capable thermal drone that your crews can transport, deploy and fly wherever they are needed.
Choose the Matrice 5TD if you want a permanently installed, automated system for DFR, security or scheduled inspection, operated remotely.
Operating mode | DJI Matrice 5T | DJI Matrice 5TD |
|---|---|---|
How it is flown | By a pilot on site | Automated from DJI Dock 4, managed remotely via DJI FlightHub 2 |
Controller | DJI RC Plus 3 Enterprise | DJI RC Plus 2 (emergency controller mode only) |
Deployment | Carried to site and launched by hand | Fixed-site installation |
Turnaround between flights | Manual battery change | Automated battery swap in under 25 seconds |
Best suited to | Mobile response, public safety, ad hoc inspection, surveying, and maritime work | Automated DFR, security patrols and scheduled inspections |
Design and portability
The Matrice 5T's foldable arms make it easier to carry, store, and move between sites.
Emergency responders can keep it ready in a vehicle and launch it on arrival, while inspection and survey crews can take it to remote or hard-to-reach locations.
The Matrice 5TD is designed to stay at a fixed site inside DJI Dock 4.
Dock 4 has an IP56 rating, an operating temperature range of -40°C to 50°C and weighs approximately 66kg, excluding the aircraft and batteries. Installation requires a site assessment and, for the full system, the DJI O4 Ground Station.
For more detail on the docked system, read our DJI Dock 4 and Matrice 5TD features and specs guide.
Thermal imaging, zoom and cameras
On paper, the Matrice 5T and Matrice 5TD share many of their headline imaging specifications.
Thermal: Both have a native thermal resolution of 1280 × 1024.
Zoom: Both offer up to 176× hybrid zoom.
Laser rangefinder: Both reach up to 3km.
Wide-angle camera: Both use a 1/0.98-inch wide-angle sensor.
Low-light support: Both include near-infrared illumination for night operations.
Both can output enhanced thermal imagery at up to 2560 × 2048. DJI calls this UHR Infrared Image on the Matrice 5T and Super Resolution on the Matrice 5TD.
The Matrice 5T also offers full-colour night vision on all three visual cameras, thermal-visible fusion with edge enhancement, and up to 11 split-screen layouts.
Both aircraft use three 50 MP visible-light cameras: wide, medium tele and tele.
Flight performance and transmission
Both aircraft offer up to 59 minutes of flight time.
The Matrice 5T has a maximum flight speed of 23m/s. The Matrice 5TD reaches 21m/s during FlyTo tasks and 15m/s in other modes.
For the Matrice 5TD, speed is closely tied to automated response: it can reach a target 3km away in under three minutes, making it well suited to DFR.
Flight and transmission | DJI Matrice 5T | DJI Matrice 5TD |
|---|---|---|
Max flight time | Up to 59 minutes | 59 minutes |
Max horizontal speed | 23 m/s | 21 m/s (FlyTo tasks only); 15 m/s (other modes) |
Operating temperature | -20°C to 50°C | -40°C to 50°C |
Video transmission | O4 Enterprise Enhanced | O4 Enterprise Enhanced |
Max transmission (CE) | 20 km | 12 km |
Range extension | Multiple relay modes | Elevated DJI O4 Ground Station; base station roaming |
Cellular | Dual built-in DJI Cellular Dongle 2 modules | Built-in dual 4G modules |
The transmission figures are not a like-for-like comparison. The Matrice 5T transmits to the pilot's remote controller, while the Matrice 5TD transmits via the DJI O4 Ground Station as part of a fixed Dock 4 installation.
Both figures are one-way, maximum distances in unobstructed, interference-free conditions. The Matrice 5T's relay modes are unavailable in countries or regions without 5GHz frequency support.
The Matrice 5TD's wider operating temperature range, down to -40°C, reflects its role as a permanently installed aircraft that needs to be available in all conditions.
Obstacle sensing and airspace awareness
Both aircraft combine LiDAR, mmWave radar and full-colour omnidirectional vision for wire-level obstacle sensing.
The Matrice 5TD's sensing suite includes a horizontal rotating LiDAR, a downward 3D infrared sensor and forward, upward and downward mmWave radars.
For airspace awareness, the Matrice 5T has a built-in ADS-B receiver to alert pilots to crewed aircraft, and a Remote ID receiver that detects nearby DJI drones. The Matrice 5TD supports Remote ID and can detect RID-equipped DJI drones within 200m.
Safety and BVLOS operations
The Matrice 5TD has been developed with BVLOS operations in mind.
The Matrice 5TD has a built-in independent Flight Termination System (FTS), segregated from the normal flight-control system, and supports the DJI AP1 Parachute.
With the FTS and parachute installed, the Matrice 5TD meets EU C5/C6 and UK5/UK6 compliance, which supports risk-based BVLOS applications.
Any BVLOS operation, with either aircraft, requires appropriate permissions. heliguy™'s in-house UK SORA consultancy can help you build your safety case and application.
Accessories and charging
Both aircraft support spotlight and speaker accessories for low-light operations and public communication.
Accessory | DJI Matrice 5T | DJI Matrice 5TD |
|---|---|---|
Spotlight | DJI AL2 Spotlight (60 W; 10 lux at 100 m in spot mode) | DJI AL2D Spotlight (11.2 lux at 100 m) |
Speaker | DJI AS2 Speaker (120 dB at 1 m; 400 m range) | DJI AS2D Speaker (120.5 dB at 1 m) |
Charging | 515W Charging Hub (included) | Automated battery swapping and charging in DJI Dock 4 |
The Matrice 5T's DJI AS2 Speaker and DJI AL2 Spotlight are sold separately, and can be fitted together while keeping its built-in LiDAR and mmWave sensing. They are not compatible with the Matrice 5TD, whose AS2D and AL2D accessories require the DJI Matrice 5TD Series Accessory Mount.
Charging reflects the deployment difference. The Matrice 5T comes with a 515W Charging Hub to keep batteries mission-ready in the field, while Dock 4 swaps the Matrice 5TD's battery automatically in under 25 seconds.
Software and onboard AI
Both aircraft run onboard AI recognition. DJI states 20+ target types for the Matrice 5T and 17 for the Matrice 5TD.
The Matrice 5T is built around in-field workflows. It supports open onboard computing for third-party AI algorithms, third-party plugins in DJI Pilot 2, and in-flight modelling with fast output on the remote controller.
It also supports automated power line inspection and Boat Launch for takeoff and landing on vessels, subject to DJI's usage conditions.
The Matrice 5TD is built around remote operations. DJI FlightHub 2 manages missions, while tools such as FH Copilot, Analyzer Pro, FH Sync and OpenAPI 2.0 support AI-assisted planning, analysis and integration.
Both aircraft work with DJI FlightHub 2, with the Matrice 5T supporting multimodal object detection through the platform.
Should you use both?
For some organisations, the answer is not one or the other.
A docked Matrice 5TD can provide automated first response or scheduled patrols across a fixed area, while a Matrice 5T gives crews a portable thermal drone to take wherever they are needed beyond the dock's operating radius.
If you're considering a mixed fleet, it's worth talking through your coverage area, mission types and operational permissions before deciding.
