DJI Mavic 4 Pro: First Use Tutorial with RC Pro 2

A complete first-use setup and flight guide for the DJI Mavic 4 Pro with DJI RC Pro 2 controller.

We'll walk you through setting up and flying your DJI Mavic 4 Pro using the RC Pro 2 controller.

It covers everything from powering on and activating the drone to basic flight controls, camera functions, and safe landing procedures. Follow each step to ensure a smooth and successful first flight.

Steps to follow

1. Prepare the Aircraft

  • Unfasten the strap and remove the gimbal protector.

  • Press the power button to activate the battery and check the level.

  • The aircraft includes internal storage and supports microSD cards.

  • Use the USB-C port for charging if needed.

  • Unfold all arms.

  • When the right rear arm is unfolded, the aircraft powers on automatically.

  • Alternatively, press the power button once, then press and hold it for 2 seconds to power on manually.

2. Set Up the Remote Controller

  • Unfold the antennas downward.

  • Extend the screen arm to power on the controller.

  • Follow the on-screen prompts to: Connect to Wi-Fi, set time zone, date, and time, and log in with your DJI Account (register if new).

  • After activation, tap Start to go through the function guide.

  • If the status LED blinks cyan, the control stick is off-centre.

  • Launch DJI Fly and follow the calibration prompts.

3. Activate the Aircraft

  • Launch the DJI Fly app.

  • Follow on-screen steps to activate the drone (internet required).

  • After activation, the aircraft is automatically bound to the remote controller.

4. DJI Care Refresh (Optional)

  • If you purchased or plan to purchase DJI Care Refresh, complete the process within 48 hours of activation.

  • You can skip this step if not needed.

5. Firmware Update

  • If prompted, tap to enter the firmware update screen.

  • Tap Update to install the latest firmware for all devices.

  • Do not power off the aircraft or exit the DJI Fly app during the update.

  • After updating, the aircraft will automatically power off.

6. Pre-Flight Setup

  • Fly in an open, unobstructed area.

  • Make sure the propellers and battery are securely installed.

  • Place the drone on level ground with the rear facing you.

  • Set the flight mode switch to Normal.

  • Open System Settings > Safety in DJI Fly: Set Obstacle Avoidance Action to Bypass or Brake. Set RTH Height above the tallest nearby object

  • Confirm that the GNSS icon is white before takeoff.

7. Takeoff and Landing

Auto Takeoff

  • Tap the Takeoff icon on the left and hold the prompt to lift off.

  • The drone will hover at a safe altitude.

Auto Landing

  • Tap the Landing icon and hold the prompt to land and stop the motors.

Manual Takeoff

  • Push both control sticks inward or outward to start the motors.

  • Once spinning, release the sticks and gently push the left stick up to take off.

Manual Landing

  • Pull the left stick down to descend.

  • After landing, keep holding the stick down until the motors stop.

8. Basic Flight Controls

  • Left Stick Up/Down – Ascend / Descend

  • Left Stick Left/Right – Yaw (rotate aircraft)

  • Right Stick Up/Down – Fly forward / backward

  • Right Stick Left/Right – Fly sideways (left/right)

  • Always keep the aircraft within optimal signal range.

9. Camera Operation

  • Focus/Shutter Button: Half-press to autofocus. Full-press to take a photo

  • Record Button: Press once to start or stop recording

  • Left Dial: Adjust gimbal tilt

  • Right Dial: Zoom in/out

  • Tap the Camera icon (bottom right in DJI Fly) to switch between auto and manual modes.

  • Use the Parameter Menu for advanced settings.

  • Tap to switch cameras: 2.5X – Medium tele. 6X – Telephoto. 1X – Wide angle.

  • Rotate the screen to toggle between landscape and portrait shooting.

  • Tap the Playback icon to view or download footage.

10. Return to Home (RTH)

  • Press and hold the RTH button on the controller, or

  • Tap the RTH icon in the app and hold the confirmation.

  • The drone will return to its last recorded home point and land.

11. Power Off and Pack Down

  • Press, then press and hold the aircraft's power button for 2 seconds to turn it off.

  • Fold the arms and propellers.

  • Install the gimbal protector, snap the cover into the buckle, and tighten the strap.

Remote Controller

  • Fold the screen arms – control sticks auto-store.

  • Press, then press and hold the power button for 2 seconds to turn off.

  • Fold the antennas.
