INTERVIEW: How UK Firefighters are Using Drones to Save Lives and Property

Emergency services around the United Kingdom are realising how useful drones can be. Many are trialling UAVs and they’re finding that they make operations safer, faster and cheaper. One of the first fire and rescue services to embrace drone technology has been Mid and West Wales (MWWFRS). It covers 4,500 square miles, that’s nearly two thirds of Wales, and employs more than 1,400 people. It’s responsible for the urban areas of Swansea, Neath and Port Talbot as well as wild and isolated countryside. In mid November 2015 they bought a DJI Inspire 1 from Heliguy and trained pilots thanks... Read More

Fixing a Water Damaged Drone: First Response, Repairing & Waterproofing

We all know that if you have a drone, sooner or later you’re going to have a crash; however good a pilot you are. Undoubtedly one of the worst places to see your prized machine fall out of the sky is over water. Drones are either treasured toys or valuable pieces of business kit and if they do end up in the drink you are potentially in a lot of trouble. You could be in it up to your neck or even deeper if you don’t take this first piece of... Read More

DJI Zenmuse XT FLIR Thermal: Resolutions, Framerates & Lenses

DJI’s game changing Zenmuse XT thermal camera is now available to order from Heliguy. Using FLIR technology and a DJI stabilised gimbal, the XT is compatible with the Inspire 1 range and the Matrice. It means you can switch from a standard airborne camera to a thermal one in just seconds. It’s the complete kit for a professional drone operator. There’s even talk of the XT being used on the Osmo handheld stabilizer but DJI cannot confirm that. The XT was announced last year and we’ve been asked constantly when they’ll... Read More

Choosing a Fixed Wing Drone

What makes a great fixed wing drone? If you’ve done even a small amount of research you’ll have realised that they come in all shapes and sizes. Some of them can almost be casually tossed into the air before flying off on a pre-planned mission, others need a nice, long, smooth runway to get airborne. They are better suited to some roles than multi-rotors are. For example they can travel faster and for longer than a quadcopter can. Types of wings and airframes The first and most important consideration for a fixed... Read More

Yuneec Q500 4K versus DJI Phantom 3 Pro

The DJI Phantom 3 Pro is one of the very best selling drones in the industry. Some people see Yuneec as a potential long term rival to DJI in the consumer-to-professional drone market. The Chinese company has a background in much larger electric powered aircraft than drone quadcopters. In 2009 Yuneec International’s E340 two seater electric aircraft made its maiden flight. It has a 7 metre wingspan. Since then the company has produced electric powered microlights (ultralights), in both fixed wing and flex-wing varieties, and motor gliders. But it’s with unmanned... DJI Rumours – Another Phantom 3, Phantom 4, Inspire 2 or Osmo 2?

It’s that time of year. Spring is almost here, even in the North East of England, and the air is filled with countless DJI rumours. Speculation is rife about a consumer hexacopter, an Inspire 2 and … a Phantom 4. Hang on a minute, the Phantom 3 was only announced on April 9th 2015. DJI are almost in danger of out-Appleing Apple if that’s the case. Before we add more fuel to the rumour engine, let’s talk about what we do know. DJI has dropped the price of its extremely... Top 10 Drone Pilot Errors

New drone pilots will have a crash sooner or later and the odds are that it’ll be a crash that causes damage to the craft. It’ll almost certainly be caused by a very common error. Here at Heliguy our tech team see the same mistakes cropping up time and time again and, so it seems, do DJI, the world’s biggest drone manufacturer. On the DJI forum they’ve listed the top 10 common pilot errors. DJI are able to analyse onboard flight data so, even if you’re convinced that there was something... Read More

DJI Launches New Weatherproof Drone Motors

Drone manufacturer DJI has launched a new weatherproof motor designed for use in a wider range of conditions. The E2000 has been developed for industrial applications and for film making. The motor’s bearings are sealed to prevent fluids like sea water causing corrosion and a surface coating has been added to the stator. This also improves the kit’s ability to resist rusting. The motor also has a built-in centrifugal cooling system which not only keeps the motor’s temperature down, it also help to keep dust and small particles out. The E2000 consists... Read More

Heliguy Commercial Drone Pilot Training on BBC Radio

Heliguy’s commercial drone pilot training programme means we are the only school based in the North Of England. BBC Radio Newcastle, which covers Northumberland, Tyne and Wear and County Durham were interested to hear about our operation and invited me along to their studios. Drive-time presenter Jon Harle chatted to me about about the training we offer to would-be commercial pilots and also the bespoke courses available for larger businesses, police forces and fire and rescue services. There was no chance of flying the DJI Phantom 3 Professional but it... Read More

Lufthansa’s DJI Drone Link-up

Lufthansa is best known as the German national airline but the Lufthansa Group has 540 subsidiaries and other companies in which it has invested. Its Aerial Services division will now be working with DJI on developing commercial uses for drones. We’ve heard of most of them already – inspection of wind turbines,... Read More
