Comparing the Mavic Series - Appearance The Mavic 2 drones keep the iconic appearance made famous by the original Mavic Pro through its foldable frame. The design and shape of the Mavic 2 has been slightly adapted when compared to the original Mavic, with smoother, more ergonomic edges. This slight design change helps the Mavic 2 reach a higher speed by reducing the wind flow and optimises the battery capacity. The small size and foldable legs let you take the Mavic 2 with you anywhere. Made for easy use in hard to reach locations, you can take the Mavic with you in a bag, pocket and pretty much anywhere else. The colour is similar to the original Mavic Pro in a slightly lighter grey. The Mavic Air has the most different appearance when compared to the rest of the Mavic Series. It's smaller in size with a more rounded shell that's sleek but looks slight bulkier and hardier when compared to the Mavic 2. Due to its smaller size, the Mavic Air is even more portable than the Mavic 2. The battery is on the bottom of the Mavic Air unlike the rest of the Mavic Series which have top-loading batteries. Like the DJI Spark, the Mavic Air is also available in a range of colours, Arctic White, Onyx Black and Flame Red. This will likely be a draw to younger pilots from the consumer drone sector. The original Mavic Pro was the first iteration of the series, bringing the foldable design to DJI's drone range. It is an easy to transport and robust drone that, even as the first drone available, is still an impressive looking drone. Comparing the Mavic Series - Camera The camera is the key factor that sets the two models of the DJI Mavic 2 apart. The Mavic 2 Pro features a camera created through a collaboration between DJI and Hasselblad, industry-leading Swedish camera manufactures and a company which DJI holds a majority share in. The Mavic 2 Pro L1D-20c Hasselblad camera has a one-inch CMOS sensor capable of UHD 4K video and 20MP. It is the most powerful camera available on a consumer/prosumer drone to date. The Mavic 2 Pro camera is designed to work in low light conditions such as sunrise and sunset, made possible by the larger sensor and increase ISO from 3200 to a massive 12800. Additionally, an adjustable aperture between f/2.8 and f/11 allows you to change your settings to suit any location and creative style. The Mavic 2 Pro also supports a 10-bit Dlog-M colour profile. This system records over one billion colours retaining more detail in shots making them more vivid and sharp. There's also a much higher dynamic range allowing flexibility for colour grading in post-production. The other key area in which the Mavic 2 Pro stands out is the supported 4K 10-bit HDR video. This helps videos have the right colour tones, as well as a bright colour contrasts. The Mavic 2 Zoom features a 24-48 mm Optical Zoom Camera with a 1/2.3” CMOS Sensor capable of UHD 4K video and 12MP images. The 4x zoom with a 2x optical zoom allows you to get close to the subject without from a safe distance. The lens options allow a varied perspective giving a cinematic effect to the available shots. The Mavic 2 Zoom utilises a hybrid auto-focus that's up to 40% faster than previous iterations. The auto-focus detects phase and contrast giving accurate results even when zooming in and out, ideal for the zoom camera. The Mavic 2 Zoom also has a new Super Resolution feature, helping you capture more detail, especially in landscape shots. In the mode, a picture taken with a 24 mm equivalent field-of-view will capture nine separate images. The nine images are then merged to create a 48-megapixel super-resolution shot with absolute detail. The Dolly Zoom Mode allows users to capture a surreal video effect that has been utilised in many feature films for decades. In this shot, the Mavic 2 Zoom will fly away from a subject whilst simultaneous zooming in on it. This results in a warping shot that's difficult to capture at the touch of a button. Both the Mavic 2 editions also share some camera features. One of the stand-out modes included on the new DJI Mavic 2 drones is the Hyperlapse Mode. This allows you to capture a moving timelapse which previously took heavy editing in post. Four Hyperlapse Modes are available on the Mavic 2 to allow you to capture a stunning shot with the touch of a button. Free, Circle, CourseLock and WayPoint Modes are available. HDR Images - HDR captures a series of images which are automatically merged offering a huge dynamic range. HyperLight Mode - Used in low light conditions to enhance image quality and reduce image noise. H.265 Codec - The Mavic 2 drones use a H.265 compression with their 4K video. This allows videos to maintain detail for higher quality clips. Slow Motion Video - Slow motion video can be captured in 1080p at 120fps. Panorama Modes - The Mavic 2 can be captured in four different modes; Sphere, 180°, Horizontal, and Vertical. The DJI Mavic Air features a three-axis mechanical gimbal with a 1/2.3" CMOS capable of 12MP images and UHD 4K video. Like the Mavic 2, the 4K video is transferred at 100 Mbps, maintaining the ultra high definition footage. The Mavic Air has a f/2.8 lens with a 35-mm equivalent lens and a focal length of 24 mm. Slow motion video can be captured at 120fps in 1080p, allowing users to capture high-quality slow-motion video for interesting shots. Panorama shots are also available including 32MP Sphere Panoramas. This captures a huge amount of detail, automatically merging your shots for a stunning an unique panorama shot. HDR images can also be captured on the DJI Mavic Air using the built-in algorithms. This gives an ideal exposure rate in the images, utilising the best parts of each image. The Mavic Pro also features a 1/2.3″ CMOS sensor capable of 4K video and 12.35MP stills. A f/2.2 lens with a 35-mm equivalent focal length is available and an electronic shutter. The Mavic Pro is capable of capturing JPEG and DNG formats, giving flexibility to instantly share images in JPEG or edit RAW files. Comparing the Mavic Series - Performance The DJI Mavic 2 drones are the most powerful drone in the Mavic Series. A top speed of just short of 45mph (72kph) is available on the Mavic 2, allowing you to fly a Mavic faster than ever before. This is thanks to the 19% reduction in the drag of the Mavic 2 drones. The Mavic 2 drones utilise DJI's OcuSync 2.0 transmission system, giving a clear connection between the drone and remote controller. Transmission is automatically switched between 2.4 and 5.8 GHz, cutting through interference in a busy environment. Video transmission is also available in 1080p and a latency of 120 ms, giving a clear view from the drone for enhanced control. A huge CE range of 3.1 miles can be achieved with the DJI Mavic 2 drones. The FlightAutonomy system on the Mavic 2 is also the most advanced system available in the Mavic Series. Omnidirectional obstacle sensing is possible with sensors on every side of the drone helping keep the Mavic 2 safer than any previous drone. These sensors are utilised in the APAS (Advanced Pilot Assistance Systems) Mode where the Mavic 2 can be flown forwards or backwards whilst it automatically detects and avoids obstacles in its path. The Mavic 2 drones have an internal memory of 8GB meaning you'll never be stuck if you forget to pack an SD card. The Mavic 2 Pro and Zoom are also packed with DJI's Intelligent Flight Modes. This includes QuickShot Modes: Asteroid, Boomerang, Waypoint, Point of Interest and Dolly Zoom on the Mavic 2 Zoom. These modes help you capture advanced shots quickly and easily. In addition to QuickShots, ActiveTrack 2.0 has been included on the Mavic 2 drones. This has been newly developed with for high-speed tracking, obstacle sensing and trajectory prediction to keep up with a target that goes out of view. The Mavic Air can go up to 42mph (68kph), the second fastest drone in the Mavic Series. This is particularly impressive considering its small size and low weight. Like the Mavic 2 drones, a built-in memory of 8GB is available. This is a handy edition that was started with the Mavic Air that will likely be seen throughout DJI's drone range moving forward. The Mavic Air uses a WiFi transmission with a max CE range of 1.2 miles. It automatically switches between 2.4 and 5.8 GHz and offers a 720p video transmission. The Mavic Air features FlightAutonomy 2.0, utilising forwards, backwards and downward cameras and sensors to help keep the Mavic Air safe. Like the Mavic 2, APAS is present on the Mavic Air, helping keep the drone safe when flying in a complex environment. Intelligent Flight Modes are also available on the DJI Mavic Air. This includes QuickShot Modes Rocket, Dronie, Circle, Helix, Asteroid, and Boomerang. ActiveTrack TapFly and Smart Capture are also available, allowing users to control the Mavic Air with simple hand gestures. The Mavic Pro is a powerful and adaptable quadcopter. It has a top speed of 40 mph (65 kph) in its Sport Mode, allowing you to quickly reach your destination. The Mavic Pro utilises DJI's original OcuSync transmission system. This transmission system was first seen on the Mavic and is becoming DJI's optimum system. Video transmission is available in 1080p and a maximum CE transmission range of 2.5 miles. a transmission frequency of 2.4 GHz is available when using the DJI Mavic Pro. The Mavic Pro has feature FlightAutonomy in the form of forwards and downward obstacle sensing. Dual redundancy can also be seen on core aspects of the drone, helping to keep you safe if the worst happens. The Mavic Pro also has access to a suite on Intelligent Flight Modes from DJI. Comparing the Mavic Series - Battery The Mavic 2 drones have the longest battery life of any in DJI's consumer range at a maximum of 31-minutes. The Mavic 2s are compatible with the DJI Intelligent Flight Battery, LiPo 4S with a capacity of 3850 mAh. Although 31 minutes is not a huge increase compared to the original Mavic, it's still impressive and should give users the ability to capture a wide range of shots. The Mavic Air has the shortest battery life in the Mavic Series, giving a maximum of up to 21 minutes in the air. Although ten minutes shorter than the advertised time of the Mavic 2 drones, this is still sufficient for consumer drone pilots, especially if using a couple of batteries. A LiPo 3S Intelligent Flight Battery is utilised in the Mavic Air with a capacity of 2375 mAh. Like the Mavic Air, the DJI Mavic Pro uses a LiPo 3S Intelligent Flight Battery, however, an improver capacity of 3830 mAh is available. This gives the Mavic Pro a maximum battery of 27 minutes and the Mavic Pro Platinum up to 30 minutes. There's little that sets the original Mavic and the Mavic 2 apart when it comes to the battery life, however, we will be checking the real-world capabilities of each drone when available.
