Heliguy is pleased to be able to offer specialist drone liability insurance to professional UAV operators through our provider, Coverdrone. You'll need drone insurance to protect both yourself and your equipment from the day of your flight assessment at the latest.
It's important to remember that the policy won't just be needed to cover your equipment for loss or damage. As a professional pilot, you'll need public liability insurance so that if your UAV or drone collides with, for example, the historic building you are filming or the factory you are inspecting; you don't have to pay for the damage. The cover can be arranged for up to £10m.
The UAV insurance policies we can arrange won't just cover your aircraft. Ancillary equipment including laptops, tablets and chargers can also come under the policy whether they're at your base, in transit or on location. You will be asked to calculate the total value of the equipment that can be in the air and therefore potentially more at risk. So, apart from the rig, it will also include the camera, memory card, gimbal and batteries.
Insurance for drones can be arranged for more than one craft and you can also add coverage for further aircraft during the course of the policy provided you give full details to the insurer. All of Coverdrone's policies allow for unlimited flying hours.
Their worldwide cover is standard for all operators subject to certain excluded territories.
Once you have passed your ground school theory exam you can apply for a drone pilot insurance policy. You'll be covered for practising and while you're training, provided that it is carried out with an experienced trainer. However, there will be slightly higher excesses because of the increased risk from an inexperienced operator. The insurers would need details from you about the nature of the training to be undertaken so that we can advise you properly regarding the extent of cover that is available. You will certainly need the policy to be in place before you can apply to the Civil Aviation Authority for your Permission for Aerial Work (PfAW).
Heliguy has a long association with the insurance business as we are frequently involved in crash post mortem reports and repairs for loss adjusters. We deal with specialists in this new and developing field so we are confident you will get the cover you will need rather than a general, all-purpose policy.
